R. K. Horton is an Alabama-born artist whose creative life has taken many forms over the years, from painting and illustration to mixed media, wearable art, and contemporary surface design.
Originally from Jasper, Alabama, Horton has maintained a lifelong connection to her hometown while pursuing a wide range of professional and creative interests. Her artwork is characterized by an adventurous use of color, pattern, texture, and unexpected materials.
Rather than limiting herself to a single medium or style, she enjoys allowing an idea to determine how it should be made.
Her work includes watercolor, acrylic, gouache, ink, oil pastel, mixed-media pieces, hand-decorated shells, jewelry, textile and fashion-inspired designs, and original artwork adapted for functional objects such as umbrellas and other wearable pieces. She is particularly interested in the point where fine art, design, fashion, and everyday objects intersect.
Horton approaches art with curiosity, humor, and a willingness to experiment. Some pieces begin with careful planning; others begin with an accident worth pursuing. She considers both legitimate artistic methods.
Now living in Tennessee, Horton continues to create through RK Horton ArtWear while maintaining strong ties to Jasper and Walker County. She is especially interested in celebrating the distinctive character, stories, and visual culture of the place she still considers home.
